Having been invited to a fight club in the suburbs of Bangalore (South India) I wasn’t really sure what to expect. Made up of men (sometimes women) in their 20’s, mostly college students, they said they fought for fun and to relax. They got the idea to hold their very own fight club after watching the movie of the same name. The man who organised it proudly showed me a poster sized print out he’d made with quotes from the film. There’s no money involved. Friends call friends and people come through word of mouth. I’m told no one gets hurt beyond a few bruises and the odd cut and scrape. Boxing gloves are used and there are rules like no kicking. People step in if things look like they’re getting out of hand. Afterwards there’s talk of holding another fight club. Next time with more people, it’ll be bigger and better than before.
